The Chinese Defence Ministry announced on Thursday that India and China are successfully implementing agreements to resolve the long-standing border stand-off in eastern Ladakh.

“Comprehensive and Effective Implementation”

Chinese Defence Ministry spokesperson Sr. Col. Wu Qian stated that both militaries are “implementing the resolutions related to the border areas in a comprehensive and effective manner.” He also expressed China’s willingness to “jointly preserve peace and tranquility in the border areas.”

Years of Tension Easing

The disengagement process in Depsang and Demchok, the last two remaining friction points in eastern Ladakh, was completed late last year. This marked a significant step in ending the four-year-long military standoff between the two nations.

High-Level Talks Revive Diplomatic Ties

Following the agreement, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping met in Kazan, Russia, on October 23, where they decided to revive bilateral dialogue mechanisms.

Subsequently, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held the 23rd Special Representative dialogue in Beijing on December 18. Furthering discussions, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri visited China on January 26, engaging in talks under the ‘Foreign Secretary-Vice Minister’ framework with his Chinese counterpart, Sun Weidong.

With continued diplomatic engagement, both nations are making progress towards restoring stability in the region after years of border tensions.
